Vintage Black and White American Optical Cat Eye Eyeglass Frames

Description

A combination of curious colouring and delicate details makes these vintage American Optical frames a must for any fan of vintage eyewear! White gold-filled rims and frame front are graced with a black-and-white, zebra-like plastic cat eye design and arms, with sleek metal decorations at the edges and sides.

The nose pads are flexible to allow for maximum comfort when worn, and the lightweight, soft plastic of the frames above the metal base keeps them from becoming too heavy. The frames measure 5" from end to end, 1 1/2" from top to bottom and 5"from hinge to tip of the arm. The bridge is marked '22 AO 1/10 12K GF', the interior of the left arm is marked 'Snodgrass' and the right is marked '4-5 1/2 American Optical', with the 'Optical' partially rubbed out from wear. Based on the style and design, the frames date from the 1950s to early 1960s. There is some darkening at the ends of the arms but overall the glasses are in very good condition for their age, with tight hinges and crisp colour.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about these frames (aside from their unusual pattern) is how they come apart: Each side can be individually disassembled with nothing more than a tiny screwdriver, making repairs and fitting new lenses a breeze!
