Renaissance Madonna and Child - Christmas Tile / Plaque

This ornament / tile plaque was created for a show I was in last Christmas with the Nativity as the theme. My inspiration was vintage and antique holy cards. Having been raised a Catholic these vintage images hold a nostalgic quality for me as a reminder of the Christmas season. This is more of a Renaissance style version of the Madonna and Child.

The sepia image is created using the original, but digitally altered holy card in the form of a iron oxide toner transfer which is then fired into the clay at about 1900 degrees. It is glazed then fired again at 2262 degrees. The borders are stamped with a lacy border and the halos and light coloring are lightly painted in for a faded, antique look. It hangs from a waxed linen cord. It weighs 3.8 ounces so is still light enough to be hung from a strong branch of a tree or very easily on an artificial one. Measures 4-1/2" x 3-1/8". Signed and dated 2008 on back.
