Description

March 17, 2009, marked my third veganniversary. To celebrate, I released a new zine about food!

So I know exactly how long I've been vegan. I can't count how many years, though, that I've been doing research on the food industry. It must be close to eight or so now. Every day it gets a little more frightening, a little more complex. And it's an issue that affects everyone who eats - which I dare say is just about everyone.

I began writing this zine thinking that it would be a zine for vegans. But then I realized that the subject of food is common to all - so why not address everyone? I decided that this zine should be written by a vegan, for everyone who eats, and that's what I've attempted to make it. Granted, a large amount of vegetarian/vegan related information made its way in, because why shouldn't everyone know about that too?

As I say in the introduction of this first issue, am I trying to convert the whole world to veganism? Well it wouldn't hurt my feelings any, but no. I simply want to make people think about the food that they buy and eat, and provide them with the information about its provenance and content that the sellers of that food will never willingly divulge.

In this issue you'll find: the first installment of a reader's guide to the food industry, some interesting corporate connections, a letter to Michael Pollan about his book The Omnivore's Dilemma, and a rant about the complicatedness of it all. There's also a bunch of cute pictures of farm animals!

Read. Enjoy. Get angry. Want to know more. And let me know all about it.

p.s. - this zine is being printed on Synergy paper - very very pale blue, and 30% post-consumer waste. Gotta love it.
