Description

The wire:
20G round half hard high quality German 10KT/40 wire 19.5 ft long, 0.8mm diameter- 1/40th 10K gold wire.

This high quality, tarnish resistant German wire is made expressly for the jewelry making industry. It is regarded by many to be second only to solid gold. This is an attractive, affordable wire that works and wears well. The rich, warm color as well as the depth of color found in this wire is outstanding.

Uses:
This wire is well suited for use in wire-wrapping and more. Hammer it, roll it, braid it, crochet with it, knit with it. Use it for earwires and clasps. Make headpins that end in a scroll or tiny loop. Use it to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants, and chain maille. Make bookmarks and paperclips. Wire wrapping:
I use Tool Magic to coat my pliers to prevent marring and damage to the wire, which not only protects the wire - it also saves me additional time and work removing nicks or rough areas. When cutting this wire, keep the flat side of your flush cutters toward the end of the wire that will show. The "pinch" will minimize exposure of the core. Use a cup burr to smooth the ends of earwires to prevent irritation.

If you are new to wire wrapping, don't worry - you will make mistakes. Don't be discouraged. Practice with inexpensive hardware store wire. Then come back and see me. I'll sell you all the wire you'd like!

Working with this wire:
This wire withstands light hammering. Extensive hammering will expose the copper core. I sometimes flatten it between two pieces of thick acrylic board (or a similar material). I use a non-metal plastic type hammer & surface if I flatten it. Some artisans just pad the wire with leather before hammering with a ball pein, or use a brass hammer directly on it.

How this wire is made:
10KT/40 (10/40 RGP) consists of an outer tube made from 1/40th 10KT gold by weight (or 2.5%) bonded to a pure copper inner core. 10KT/40 is made in the same - or very similar - manner as gold-filled wire. This is not a plated wire. Electroplated wire has only a microscopic application of gold on top of non precious wire, in a thickness of .175 microns ( 7 - one millionths of an inch). To try and visualize this, a human hair measures between 70 and 200 microns, vs .175 microns. There is no comparison between 10KT/40 wire and plated wire.

This wire is being represented by others as gold filled (aka gold-filled, goldfilled). Be aware that although this is a superior product, it isn't 10KT gold filled wire. FTC regulations state that only wire that contains 1/20th gold by weight can 10KT/40 cannot be described as “gold-filled” (aka gold filled, goldfilled), since it is made with 1/40th gold by weight instead of 1/20th.
