Travel Niddy Noddy with Bag and WPI gauge, makes 7 skein sizes, pompons
Description
Ordinary niddy-noddies are bulky and clumsy to carry around, and only make two sizes of skein. I wanted a niddy-noddy that travelled compactly, made more skein sizes, and was reasonably attractive and affordable. So, I designed this for my own use, and along the way realized that I could add a WPI gauge, and that the parts could also configure to make a decent pom-pon or fringe making frame. It all fits in a drawstring bag - choose your color from the last photo.I chose US poplar for the main sections (connections are CPVC plastic), and made a drawstring bag to hold all the parts. The heads of the niddy noddy are glued, and I sanded a bevel into the edge to keep the yarn where it's supposed to be. The cross-bars change out, and can be combined, so this one niddy noddy makes seven skein sizes: 32", 48", 1 yard, 1 1/2 yard, 2 yards, 66" and 2 1/2 yards (approximate - actual finished skein measurements may vary depending on how tightly you wind, and how much the skein shrinks when the twist is set).
The smallest piece of wood in the set has a recessed one-inch WPI gauge, for comparing yarns and helping spinners maintain consistency. This piece when put between the two heads can be used as a pompon frame. Any of the pieces can be used for fringe, depending on how long you wish the fringe to be. The crossbars are color coded on the ends, and you will receive a guide showing the combinations of pieces that make the different skein sizes. I finished the wooden parts with a coat of Tung oil to protect the wood from shrinking/swelling. I also made the bag from twill fabric, with serged seams and eyelets for the drawstring and a bead slider. Choose your fabric from the last picture and let me know in the notes when you pay. Choices are black/white check, violet plaid, blue denim, black/teal print corduroy and multicolored twill stripe. The disassembled niddy noddy in the bag measures 12" long and 4" wide - very easy to tuck in your knitting bag/spinning basket.
NOTE: A niddy noddy is used for winding skeins. As a spinner for almost 20 years now, I do NOT recommend setting the twist on your knitting yarn while it is still on a niddy-noddy. Doing so, while your yarn is under tension, will artificially stretch the yarn and make it lifeless, like string -- until you wash whatever you've knitted with the yarn, in which case your article will shrink back to the size it would have been if the twist had been set properly!
To set your twist... soak skeined yarn in warm water for 1/2 hour minimum, or suspend over steam for 5 minutes. Roll soaked yarn in a towel, or spin in washing machine to remove excess water, then hang to dry. DO NOT weigh yarn with anything heavy or dry under tension! Balanced plied yarn will hang straight. Singles may twist slightly, and can be weighted with something light, like a washcloth, if necessary. Some novelty/art yarns may benefit from more weight.
