200 grams Fair Trade Recycled Sari Silk Ribbon, 70 to 80 yards

Description

This lot of ribbon consists of two skeins of recycled sari silk ribbon. Each skein weighs about 100 grams, for a total of approx. 200 grams (7 ounces). Each skein is about 35-40 yards; there is considerable variation in yardage since the width and thickness of the ribbon vary and it is packaged by weight, not length. You get both skeins for just $12.95.

The first photo shows the actual skeins that you will receive; the second photo shows what a typical skein looks like when it's untwisted. Please note, these skeins are twice as big as the ribbon skeins I had in stock in March and April.

This fair trade sari ribbon is made by a women's collective in Nepal that collects sari silk scraps from textile factories. They stitch the scraps together, end to end, to form a long multi-colored ribbon of sari fabric, which may include solids, irridescents, stripes, and jacquards. The edges of this ribbon are not finished like a commercial ribbon, they are frayed. The width of the ribbon varies considerably throughout the skein; on average it's about 7/8." Texture varies too - some sections are very soft, other sections (especially those with metallic embroidery) are somewhat stiff. Some embroidered sections may have a papery backing, which can be peeled off. As with most recycled silk products, this ribbon may not be completely colorfast when wet - I recommend handwashing separately in cold water with a gentle detergent.

If you have severe allergies to metal, then it may be best to avoid recycled sari ribbon due to the fact that it usually contains small amounts of metallic thread, a popular embellishment for saris.
