"The Poetical Works of John Greenleaf Whittier". This big, beautiful poetry book was published in 1892 by Houghton, Mufflin, and Company, The Riverside Press, Cambridge. Lovely art nouveau cover decoration with beautiful detailing. Gilt on the cover, spine, and page edges. Nice illustrations - several etchings throughout the book. The print is very small.The book is in good condition. There is a gift inscription on the back side of the end paper, and for some reason someone cut the date out of the inscription. The hinge is slightly cracked, but the binding is in good shape. Measures 10" x 6 3/4" and has 344 pages.
Whittier was an influential American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. He is usually listed as one of the Fireside Poets. This book was published the same year as his death. Whittier's poetry and prose is exceptional and nature was often the subject matter. An excerpt from 'The Bridal of Pennacook':
"Unkown to her the subtle skill
With which the artist-eye can trace
In rock and tree and lake and hill
The outlines of divinest grace..."
