Ribbed Basket SGM7 Medium Sized Appalachian Basket in Seagrass

The handle part of the twisted frame here is made out of "Datu", a type of reed that still has the skin on and is a golden, light brown. It has a stunning contrast next to just about anything that is woven into a basket. The god's-eye lashings are tightly wrapped in cane - the tough outer skin of the same reed that is used for the ribs. The shiny, smooth skin is a lovely contrast against the rustic seagrass used in the body of the basket. The weaving starts off with an inch of contrasting dyed reed in a space-dyed combination called "Victorian" (wine, green, gold), before giving way to the seagrass for the rest of the weaving. Seagrass is imported, but very much like grass I have harvested on the beach in Manzanita OR.
Very sturdy - with 14 ribs, between the frame, this basket has a pleasing shape that sits on its "haunches" - a modest and classic "fanny" basket. This style evolved from it's function as a service basket - hauling goods to and from the farm (handy at the market). The haunches sit well on a hip when it full. Sits well on your counter or display shelf or you could hang it from the ceiling as part of a collection. Will make a beautiful basket for bread or rolls at a holiday table.
What's the big deal with ribs and why does it matter how many are worked into a basket? Well, the ribs give the Appalachian style basket its structure. I struggle with my students every summer when they want to limit their basket to as few ribs as possible. It takes some patience and determination to learn to add ribs, although it is accomplished easily enough with enough patience and determination. Kids tend to want instant gratification and want their baskets woven in a hurry. I tell them they can rush through their basket, and still take it home to show off with pride, but if it doesn't have enough ribs, it's not going to last long and will not be heirloom quality. Some of my larger baskets have 24 or more ribs.
