Red Stained Flower, 1 oz top whorl drop spindle

Description

Whorl: 3.5 inches/9 cm, hand-rubbed cranberry stain

note: Unlike all of my other spindles, I do not "make" these flowers. They are embossed wood appliques that I buy from a woodworking store. I do prepare them (drill, lightly sand and stain) for use as whorls. I also shape, carve, stain, and pre-drill the shafts for the hooks before assembling.

Shaft: hand-carved leafy vine motif, hand-rubbed deep green stain (this one is a deeper green than previously), blunt beveled end

Total Length (including hook): 11 inches/28 cms

Fine Details: I use tiny, solid brass eye screws (opened and polished) rather than bulky cup hooks. Once complete, each spindle is sealed with several coats of premium satin polyurethane, hand-rubbed with fine steel wool between coats. Each spindle is signed, dated and the weight in fine print on the bottom of the whorl.

I've recently spun and plied some lovely merino/silk blend into a fine, 2 ply heavy lace/light fingering weight for a shawl on one of these. It spins like a dream! The whorl is so light, even with being 3.5 inches, it practically floats on air.

This is an awesome choice for the beginner (much better than those clunky student spindles (much better than those clunky student spindles or toy wheel learn to spin kits)) or the collector.
