RESERVED for aroseinwinter - Babydoll Southdown raw fleece, rare breed sheep, 2.69lb Charcoal
Description
Babydoll Southdown fleece in the grease, in natural color shades of stunning charcoal gray with dark copper brown tips. This fleece comes from Domino, a 2 year old ram who carries the spotting genetics, although he only has a couple small spots. In addition to that unique feature, he has a simply wonderful fleece, unique among the herd with a spiral crimp easing out to a larger wave crimp on the tips. The hand is delightfully fine and soft. Excellent for your next to the skin projects. Possibly the best fleece in the herd. We kept his fleece last year, so this is the first year it is available.Listing is for remaining raw fleece, a total of 43oz. Please let me know if you would like a different amount.
For larger projects, consider blending Domino's fleece with some angora or alpaca for a really wonderful soft, fuzzy, extra warm cabled cardigan! What spinning bliss that would be, Domino's fleece with angora!
~~Rare breed sheep~~
For your spinning or felting pleasure, up for sale is this hand-skirted Babydoll Southdown fleece fresh from the sheep. It is a wonderful natural gray shade with oatmeal-cookie tips. It has a nice lock structure with the characteristic boxyness of down sheep. Her fleece separates nicely and handles easily. This is a fluffy and delightful wool with excellent springiness.
Like many fine wools, this fleece is on the short side— 2 to 3 inch staple length (mostly ~2 inch). But be not afraid! It actually spins nicely. Due to the mixture of crimp and spiraling curl, it holds together just enough to be easy to control. Another spinner who bought one of our fleeces commented that it made a lovely, bouncy yarn. This is the type of fleece that will give you “comfort yarn”.
Babydoll facts: Samples of fleece were tested and found to be 19 to 22 microns, which puts the fleece in the class of Cashmere. The Babydolls fleece also has more barbs per inch then any other wool types, making it an ideal blend with either Angora rabbit or Angora goat. This is a rare and miniature breed of sheep, standing typically 24 inches at the shoulder. They are adorable and typically friendly for sheep, and suitable for smaller acreage. They are making a comeback as pets and for small spinner’s flocks. This fleece is from Sweetwater Farm in Hampstead, MD (http://www.babydollsouthdowns.com/index.htm).
These sheep are not coated, so the fleeces contain varying amounts of vm.
