Mokume Gane Polymer Bracelet
Description
This is one of Celie's signature designs. The process used in this braclet is an adaptation of true mokume gane, an ancient Japanese metalworking technique in which contrasting metals are soldered together and then distorted to create a multi-colored wood grain effect. In the polymer clay version that she has developed, an inch high stack is made by alternating thin layers of tinted translucent clay with 23k gold leaf. After 5 to 6 layers the stack is covered with a layer of black clay. This “billet” is then distorted with various tools engineered and commandeered for this purpose. Because the distortion takes place from the top black layer, patterns of black are driven down through the layers of tinted clays and gold leaf. Next, tissue thin slices are shaved off horizontally with a very sharp, long blade. These snippets of calligraphic design are then used to embellish a rolled out snake of polymer clay.
Once baked, sanded and polished, Celie adds her fine silver, sterling, polymer and beaded components. Some are carved, other's textured, they roll around and have a lovely feel and sound.
A true work of art!
