Each costume was more intricate than the one at its side, the piano was played hard and the rich played harder. She had stolen her employers wig and borrowed a gown the daughter of the same employer...borrowing in the sense that this article she would return. Her hands, usually wrinkled from days of soaping and washing, cooking and cutting...shined. Could this masquerade masque transform everything. There were clocks everywhere, thirty, maybe forty, there were little cakes on trays served by people like her, people who didn't have a costume to steal. Tonight she would eat cake and dive into the world of the clocks and live forever.
