1850 'The Hoopoe', Tallis' Scriptures Natural History Hand-Colored Engraving

'The Hoopoe', a wonderfully detailed engraving, is from 'Tallis' Scripture Natural History For Youth', an 8-volume 1850 English work devoted to the study of natural history with a religious slant & geared toward children.

The paper is heavy & there is a gentle all-over tanning to betray its nearly 155+ years. The paper is clean & smooth, & the corners only slightly softened. The page measures 5" x 7" (13 x 18 cm), with no tears, folds, creases or marks.

These were small volumes issued as serials or subscriptions. Pages were bound by string, long gone missing. The date of '1850' comes from the volume's back paper wrap which includes advertising for other items being offered by the publisher in the 'upcoming' year ~ 1851.

A gorgeous study to frame, fantastic to use in your art ~ your vintage-inspired card or scrap-book page making ... your collage, mixed media.
