Poste Italiane - vintage Italian postage stamps

This handmade vellum envelope holds a little treasure trove of vintage Italian postage stamps. These stamps are truly lovely, with soft colors, nice shading, and classical drawings (which all seem vaguely familiar from my art history days). The dates I can find on postmarks seem to hover around 1964, though the actual stamps aren't dated.

Here are the stamps:

6 grey man with beard - says 100 Lire and Poste Italiane
1 green man with head wrap stamp - says 20 Lire "Poste Italiane"
1 red thinking man stamp - says 90 Lire "Poste Italiane"
1 purple man in helmet stamp - says 30 Lire "Poste Italiane"
1 red wild hair man stamp - says 40 Lire "Poste Italiane"
1 blue old man stamp - says 70 Lire "Poste Italiane"

1 Globe Stamp - says "Prima Conferenza Postale, Poste Italiane, Parigi-1863" dated 1963
1 brown lady with crown stamp - says "20 Lire, Poste, Repvbbica Italiana"
1 blue lady with crown stamp - says "60 Lire, Poste, Repvbbica Italiana"
1 red horse with wings stamp - says "Poste Italiane Lire 75 Espresso"

I recently found an amazing box of old postage stamps. These little pieces of art are so beautiful and full of history. I imagine they were saved by an older lady throughout her life, oldest are from about 1912, and they range up though the 1970's. It's a really cool snapshot of history.

Judging from the other stamps, I believe they had a loved one in the military and that the foreign stamps like these may be a result of their travels.

So, these stamps have been mailed from far away countries. They have postmarks, dates, and some are attached to bits of old envelopes. . . making them even more wonderful!

The envelope is 3.5 inches by 2.25 inches with a little flap. Stamps range in dimension, but are a typical size.

They are perfect just as they are - as a little collection or a bit of inspiration. Or, you could of course use them as an element in your artwork.
