NEW - SYLVIA PLATH LADY LAZARUS Hand Stenciled Shirt - L

Description

This is a hand stenciled shirt featuring the poet Sylvia Plath and the text "Lady Lazarus" which is the title of an autobiographical poem she wrote. The text is in a typewriter font.

::WHO'S THAT LADY?::

"Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 – February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist, children's author, and short story author. Along with Anne Sexton, Plath is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry initiated by Robert Lowell and W. D. Snodgrass. Born to middle class parents in Jamaica Plain, MA, Sylvia Plath published her first poem when she was eight. She was, on the surface, a model daughter, popular in school, earning straight A's. By the time she entered Smith College on a scholarship in 1950 she already had an impressive list of publications, and while at Smith she wrote over four hundred poems. Sylvia's surface perfection was however underlain by grave personal discontinuities. During the summer following her junior year at Smith, having returned from a stay in NYC where she had been a student ``guest editor'' at Mademoiselle Magazine, Sylvia nearly succeeded in killing herself by swallowing sleeping pills. She later described this experience in an autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar, published in 1963, under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. After a period of recovery involving electroshock and psychotherapy Sylvia graduated from Smith summa cum laude in 1955 and won a Fulbright scholarship to study at Cambridge, England. In 1956 she married the English poet Ted Hughes , and in 1960, when she was 28, her first book, The Colossus, was published in England. Less than two years after the birth of their first child, Ted had an affair with Assia Wevill, and their marriage ended shortly after. During the winter of 62-63, one of the coldest in centuries,Sylvia was living in a small London flat, with two children, ill with flu and low on money. The hardness of her life seemed to increase her need to write. On Feb 11, 1963, Sylvia Plath killed herself with cooking gas at the age of 30."

This is not silk screened. I hand cut this stencil with an xacto knife.

This is apart of a feminism series of stencils I'm doing on influential women. I want to make this clothing to empower women. So, Represent! With these powerful ladies!

This is a RECYCLED shirt. Brand New Condition. Overstock purchased from thrift store. 100% Cotton. Long sleeved. Details on the back of the shirt, see photo 5.

::CARE INSTRUCTIONS::

Washable. COLD WASH GENTLE CYCLE. HANG DRY OR LOW HEAT. The gentler you are with it the longer it will last. If you need to iron it, turn it inside out and place a cloth on the shirt. Do NOT iron directly on the image!
