→ DESCRIPTION: Super fun mix of pinback OR flatback buttons featuring vintage patterns that I've collected over the years, most coming from vintage fabric and wallpaper. The pictures feature examples of the designs you may receive. Every batch is a surprise and each button will feature a different design (no repeats).

PLEASE don't forget to let me know your preference (PINBACK or FLATBACK) in the "note to seller" field on Etsy's checkout page! **FLATBACK** BUTTONS WILL BE SENT IF NO PREFERENCE IS STATED. This is important because I will not send you free replacements if you forget to tell me which kind you want - most people order flatbacks and if you don't tell me you want pinbacks, I don't have any way of knowing that that is what you want. Please tell me your preference. Please please pleeease! Thank you!

What's the difference? Flatbacks have a black plastic back that's great for gluing onto ring blanks, hairpins (both available in my shop!), and also work wonderfully as cabochons to glue to pretty much anything. Pinbacks are the kind with a pin for wearing. (See photos.)

PIN BACK?: These designs are also available with a pin back (see 4th photo). I've decided to separate the listings. If you purchase any of the older listings, you will receive the same item at the same price - just please remember to state your preference if you buy an older listing. If you buy this listing and an old one, I'll send all flatbacks (unless you request otherwise during checkout). If you purchase this listing it is only necessary to leave a note if you prefer pinback buttons (4th photo).
→ PROCESS: I use a professional button press and do all of my printing at a local print shop where I am able to both support indie business and produce the highest quality print possible. After printing, circles are cut, paper is paired with mylar for protection and durability and then pressed with my pal, Mr. Button Press.
→ THE PROCESS OF SEARCH & RESTORATION, IF YOU'RE CURIOUS: Before this shop took over my life, I ran a blog featuring vintage photos from my collection of vintage ephemera that I spent a lot of time digitally restoring (photos from the late 1800's, illustrations, pictorials and ads from magazines and illustrations from children's books dating from the late 1800s to the 1970s, staitionary, etc).
I've spent endless, often tedious hours digitally restoring rips, tears, creases, stains, and washed out colors to bring photos to life again. I take great care to preserve the original beauty of these images, studying each until I feel I have a clear idea of its original color palette, intensity and tone so as to (hopefully) avoid going overboard and ending up with a garish mess. I work in the same manner when preparing the designs featured on these buttons. In addition to scans of vintage wallpaper and fabric, resources also include vintage stationary and cabinet lining, playing cards, matchboxes, even photos of engravings on vintage jewelry boxes and the lovely patterns found on my collection of vintage tins.
I've included a before and after photo (last one) of a magazine cover from 1953 which I restored and was rather happy with, especially considering the fading, tears and the need to reconstruct some of the lettering. This is just to give an idea of the work (often more than anticipated), care and time poured into bringing the vintage patterns I work with back to life and merging the old with the new by taking high-res scans giving them a wee bit of a technological Wizard of Oz Wash & Brush Up Co.-style spiffing up. The example is to show how I attempt to bring out the original look and style without destroying it by over-editing.
(This image is not an example of an image you may receive on a button, though I have made it into mirrors and larger magnets in the past - contact me if you're interested. For those, the girl and boy were carefully cut out (digitally) and put on a crisp, white background.)
