The Three Sirens call you into this painting and then defy you to understand them completely. All three are showing only their torsos and parts of arms, so these are beautiful nudes to hang in your home without being vulgar. In fact, they are quite elegant - a celebration of not only the female body but also of what have long been termed "female arts", such as sewing. There is a soft light coming in from the right, illuminating the back of that figure and playing against the cooler blues in her body. There is warmth repeated on her arm and belly, a contrast of strong life against the other two figures who are painted in grays and deep pink. Dark purple at the bottom fades as it travels up the pleats, transforming into the colors of the figures.

I hand sewed the canvas into smocking pleats, like my mother used to sew on my dresses, to give this painting a three dimensional tribute to the art of sewing (although these pleats have been gessoed to be completely stable and permanent). I learned to sew at the age of four, and it was ingrained in me much earlier that "sewing is an art of dignity, delicacy, and self-expression". Perhaps this piece is in fact a portrait of the generations of women to taught me these fine arts and taught me that the "crafts" of women are just as important to our art history as those of famous painters.

This large painting is 28 inches tall and 36 inches wide, on heavy-weight 2" stretcher bars to last for generations. It is painted in oil on canvas, and is the original painting. My signature is on the back.
