King Ahwahnahwhoopi immigrated to Troutdale from the Tuamtuarch Islands in the South Pacific. He didn’t have a very clear idea of the Northwest’s climate or customs, but he’d checked it out on the globe in his daughter’s schoolroom, and the place names looked easy to spell. Portland, Canby, Boring, Dundee—all so nice an short. Such sensible names!

So he packed up his family, and sold the kingly quarters, which he will assure you weren’t as luxurious as that sounds, and moved them all to Oregon, state of bliss and ease of spelling.

If his daughter’s globe had been an atlas, or even a more detailed folding map, King Ah (for short) would have seen names like Tualatin, Puyallup, Umpqua, Suislaw and Wahkiakum before they moved, but he’s here, and he’s just focusing on everything new and wonderful, and avoiding maps and gazetteers altogether.
