Cuckoo Carousel Stripe or Swirl Crazy Mixemups Cuckoobatts Wool Batts for Spinning or Felting

Cuckoobatts are big (3+oz) fluffy spinning/felting batts with a cuckoobird mix of fibers and colors.

For the Crazy Mixemups I made several different Cuckoobatts of natural and hand-dyed fibers, carded with sparklies and yarn bits, and then stripped them into chunks and recarded them all together.

This series is called Cuckoo Carousel, because when it's spinning by in the carder, it looks like a crazy pink and purple pony circus carousel spinning out of control. Wheeeee!

I have two different versions: swirl (first 2 shown) or stripe (second 2 shown). Both use a base of a pool of 5 or 6 different coordinating colorways of batts, but the swirls have had them all applied to the drum carder in layers, while the stripy ones (you guessed it) have been applied in stripes. So if you want a (somewhat) consistent yarn or felt, use swirl, and if you want to pull it into different strips to make self-striping yarn, use the stripy batts.

The Crazy Mixemups make a colorful, textured yarn or felt. Because of yarn bits and neps, it's not suitable for a thin, smooth yarn, but it's marvelous fun for art yarn. Plan on a tweedy single or 2 ply or a cuckoo bubbly or thick and thin yarn. I've included a picture of skeins spun from this batt, a single and a bubbly thread-plied novelty. One batt produced both skeins.

If you've never spun from a batt, you can tear it into strips (and pre-draft them if you wish), draft the whole thing repeatedly until you have one long strip of roving, or (my favorite), spin directly from the whole batt, letting the fibers get drawn in randomly. Batts are lofty and draft effortlessly, so they're easy peasy lemon squeezy. If you're a beginning spinner, struggling with dense, heavy yarn spun from wool top, you will be well pleased with your lofty batt-spun yarny goodness.
