Description

Trailer #7 is a limited edition etching with aquatint and hand-dyed paper chine colle inspired by meandering car rides through the mountains of North Carolina (and visits to my grandma, whose extended family set up their trailers all along her property.) For those who may be wondering what an etching is, I'll give you the quickie definition. I draw an image onto a metal plate that has been coated in an acid resist. I scratch through the acid resist to render the image and then stick the plate into acid so the acid creates deep grooves in my drawn areas. I then wipe the plate with ink so that it gets into the grooves and run the print through a hand-crank press with dampened paper so the ink can really penetrate it. For those of you scratching your heads and wondering what a chine colle is, it's a technique in which pieces of colored paper are brushed with an adhesive, laid face-down on the etching plate, and then sandwiched between the plate and the backing paper as the plate/paper combo travels through the press. It's a way of getting blocks of color onto a print without having to use multiple plates. I'm a big fan and love the creative potential it affords.

This particular print measures 8" x 11" and was printed in an edition variable of 20 (although some have been sold.) The variable is that some some of the edition are printed on the paper pictured (Somerset), while others are printed on Nideggen and Rives BFK. I will gladly email you pictures of each paper and let you choose.
