Raku Tile Art - Ready to hang or display
Description
Medium: Hand-carved raku-fired tile on stained wood backingSize: 8"x8"x3/4"
The tile on this unique artwork was hand-formed and carved, (not press molded) so it is a one-of-a-kind. It was raku fired to create the multi-colored matte copper finish.
Raku firing is when glazed ware is heated to red-hot temperatures, then pulled directly out of the kiln and placed in a barrel full of newspaper. The newspaper ignites, sucking the oxygen directly out of the glaze. Before all the oxygen is sucked out (or "reduced") from the ware, the barrel is opened and the pot is sprayed with water, permanently fixing the colors.
The raku tile has been super-glued to a wooden frame lightly stained blue to leave the wood-grain exposed. A short dowel inserted in a hole in the back allows the art to be free standing. To hang on the wall, simply remove the dowel and hang using the hole.
All art is signed and dated by the artist. This piece looks great alone or in combination with other raku tile art (see picture to right).
