Self Portrait With Sphinx (Blue version) original relief woodblock print

Description

"Self Portrait with Sphinx" is an original relief print carved from wood block and printed with oil based ink on smooth, sky blue, heavyweight paper. The print is signed and titled with its edition number in pencil. I print each piece by hand with a wooden rice paddle so every one is unique. This piece is one in a limited addition of 4, and a second limited edition of 19 on a different color paper. I used a reduction method meaning that the blocks were destroyed as part of the art-making process and no future editions can be printed.

This particular print was created in 2006 for a trade with other artists under the theme of "Excess". Some people have commented that it looks like a beauty pageant – perhaps I'm competing against the hairless cat? This run is special to me since I bought the blue paper on a whim because it was so beautiful. The differences between this blue version and the originally planned manila version are subtle, but the biggest difference is that the pink skin of the woman and cat are both emphasized more in this version. Part of this piece's charm is the accentuated wood grain in the floor. It has been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The image measures 11.5" x 14". It comes with a bright white mat and acid free foam core backing which measure 16" x 20" – a standard frame size for customers' convenience.
