Description

"Just Treading Water" - Mixed-media 20" x 28" artwork

... to move forward, we must first open our eyes! To see a video of how this painting was made go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=lVrDTwQqld4

The woman in the painting is treading water. Just going and going. Not really getting anywhere. Trying to avoid the shapes around her which symbolize her fears, her obligations, and things she is putting off. Her expression is not frantic, though. She is more stubborn, really. She refuses to see that all she needs to do is open her eyes to the possibilities. She can reach out. There's no need to keep struggling.

One aspect of the symbolism in this painting is how the body and everything below the surface is more abstract to show the distortion of what's in our minds compared to the outer reality (above the surface).

Hopefully , this painting will inspire the viewer to call out in their mind, "Just open your eyes!" Perhaps it will remind them to do the same. To accept help when needed. To take a different view on the things that seem to be dragging them down. To move forward! :)

This mixed-media creation consists of acrylic paint, copper leafing pen, and raised clear, heavy acrylic gel medium with embedded glass microbeads and 3 raised plastic discs. It is difficult to show the sparkling effects of the glass beads and the shimmer of the copper. It looks much more impressive in person.

The painting is ready to be framed. If however, you prefer not to frame, it can be hung as is. Although it IS NOT gallery wrapped (staples are on the sides) I have prepared it in such a way that the staples are covered and do not show. I have painted the sides black as well. I hate to waste a perfectly good canvas even though it is the trend to have artwork which doesn't have to be framed.
