“Early Masturbatory Materials” is a series of paintings about how perfectly natural, sexual, or sexy things are taken and transformed into unappealing, asexual line drawings in order to teach our children about sex. Yet an uninitiated, pre-Playboy 12- or 13-year-old with only these images as a visual reference to the taboo issue of sex may not only find them attractive but form their early masturbatory fantasies around them.

This black on white acrylic painting entitled “FIGURE 1: The Vagina” depicts a vagina straight from the pages of your ever-so-helpful sex-ed textbook. “FIGURE 1: The Vagina” is the first installment of my husband's “Early Masturbatory Material” series.
