Historical Pigments Series Caput Mortum Painting
Description
The Historical Pigment series are paintings that are portraits, the subjects being based on the origin of famous pigments. The idea behind this series was not only to pay homage to the origin of oil pigments, but to use a monochromatic color scheme in a fun way!The origin of Caput Mortum is mysterious and morbid...it is a deepish, opaque purple-brown-red, now-obscure color; one that was once believed (and in some cases confirmed) to have been derived from mummy wrappings and/or the ground up powder of the deceased from Al Khemri. In fact, there is still a color by the name of Mummy available by some paint manufacturers. Of course, we don't use ancestors for colormaking--and as a consequence artmaking--anymore...yet, the vesitiges of this past lie in the color's translated name--"Death's Head."
This painting is 6"x6", using Rembrandt and Permalba oil paints on Gessobord brand gessoed hardboard surface. It has been given a coat of Liquin resin alkyd to give it a nice, satiny finish.
