Pollution, be it oil spills by tankers, sewage overflow, or common littering,kills every day. Woven plastic onion sacks floating in the sea have entrapped endangered hawksbill sea turtles. Plastic bags become invisible to birds diving for fish and are skewered by the birds' sharp bills, usually resulting in their death. Plastic is also mistaken for food and is eaten at sea by birds, turtles, and even whales. This can choke them, poison them, or simply make them think they are full when this "food" has no nutritional value. Many marine animals get entangled in fishing lines used by recreational anglers. This costume is dedicated to the effort to stop beach pollution.

It's GREEN.....it's unique....it's OOAK, it's upcycled...

I started with a pale pink vintage prom dress, tight fitting, strapless, lace over satin, with a flared below the knee skirt....the exact silhouette of a mermaid.

After several failed attempts,I dyed it pale green.Then sprayed with green and dull brown paint, in a mottled , blotchy fashion.....unhealthy fishy colors.


I added things from a round the house......things that need never be thrown into the sea, things that KILL living beings...like plastic 6 pack holders,drinking straws, bottle tops,styrofoam, rope, fishing corks, fishing line, and a painted plastic ship. I also added an empty oil container, a non-used syringe with the needle removed (courtesy of my vet), and a handmade rope fishing net. (YAY !Hubby!!)In the front is a laminated "Warning: No Swimming "sewage in water" sign, mounted on a wood post from a flower pot sign.

I made arm sleeves, and dyed them green, and added fishing corks, rope, and "Seaweed", made of old green bumpy yarn.

Costume comes with extra fishing line, rope, and "Seaweed" yarn for you to drape anyhow you like.

Dress has boned bodice, padded bust, and a long back zipper.Shown on a size 4 model.

NOTE: sand was wet when model was lying on it, but the dress is not "damaged"....unless you count the deliberate damage we did!!
