Paradise Bathing Beauty Box

Description

This is one of 2 boxes I did for a group theme show at the gallery that shows my boxes. It's one of my more recent pieces completed in the last couple of years. The basic box is constructed of 1/2 inch wood. It incorporates textured paper (waves), stucco textured modeling paste (the sand), real fresh water shells, polymer clay, masonite, paper mache and hand painted with acrylics. All of the sides are basically the same. A ribbon is used as a lid support. The box itself measures 6 x 6 x 10 1/4", but including the lid, & flags it's 15 1/2" tall.

I would consider this a kinda delicate piece, in that the details & embellishments can't take a lot of rough handling. The lid can't be opened close to a wall or the flags on top may get dinged. So care does need to used in dealing with this piece. It's only been shown in the gallery for a short time because I was afraid it'd get damaged. Galleries have a way of doing that sometimes.
It is one of a kind.

Although I may repeat a theme I find particularly interesting, each piece is individually crafted. They're not meant to be examples of perfection but have a quality of simplicity or primitiveness about them. The use of found objects and hand-constructed elements adds to this concept. This is important because I find it lends a sense of whimsy and/or eccentricity, which is the spirit in which I approach each piece. These containers are meant to be used, albeit handled with care. I would like to think that many years from now they'll still be around, maybe a little battered and dirty but treasured as an odd remnant from the past.

This would probably only be practical for Canada or Mexico because of the size, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
