Concrete Lightbulb with Display Stand
Description
A Concrete Lightbulb mounted on an oak display stand, this unique and paradigm-shifting item will stand out proudly on your desk or table, making people stop and think about what it is.Quite the conversation piece, it brings surprising materials and texture to an everyday shape that everyone knows but now will see in a new light.
Made from a cement mortar mix, this lightbulb was poured into a hollowed out lightbulb, cured and then had the glass removed. The glass mold gives it a high shine and polished surface. During curing, the mortar mix leaves small holes in the surface that gives it some texture and character. Because of this, every Concrete Lightbulb is unique.
A threaded rod was embedded before curing, and sticks out beneath the bulb. This rod is screwed into the display stand to make a very solid display piece.
The display stand itself is custom made out of solid oak, hand sanded and finished. Underneath is has a layer of foam rubber attached to protect your surface from any scratches.
If you are using this concrete lightbulb to crack nuts, I would recommend removing the foam rubber.
Back when I first started this whole concrete lightbulb thing, I wasn’t really sticking anything in them like a lag bolt. Just the lightbulb itself for the look of a lightbulb made out of concrete. The problem was, they tend to roll around and fall off the table onto your foot. After while of having things drop onto my toes, I started putting in threaded rod in the end of the lightbulb, so I could screw that down on a base and not have it roll. Besides, a nice display stand would dress it up a bit.
I did that for a little while and used those bulbs to experiment with various ideas and concepts. Then the SewUseful contest came out and I needed to turn the concrete lightbulb into something “useful”. A great Bludgeoning Device For Your Desk! was probably not the best usage I could use to promote, so I started putting lag bolts in them and promoting them as wall hooks. Still, I had a few early prototypes around on crude bases and enjoyed the look. Some of those pictures have been posted on my website and some people have asked for the bulb without the lag bolt, so after making some quality display stands, here they are.
