Artist trading cards have a long history, stemming from the popularity of portrait miniatures in the 17th century, and gaining added momentum during the impressionist era.
The Latin word crux is derived from "cruciare", meaning to torture. It is chiefly associated with the torture and killing of Jesus Christ, and thus with the Christian religion and Christianity.
So why paint a cross when it represents torture? It also represents religion in general and that is spirituality. I am a student of all religions and have several crosses in my home.
