I wanted to paint Howard Hughes because he was such a misunderstood genius, but I put it off until I knew exactly how I wanted to portray him. One day I came up with the idea of painting his famous “Spruce Goose” in a spiral behind him. The spiral effect brings the viewers focus directly to Hughes’ face. I thought that was only fitting for a man as captivating and interesting as Howard Hughes.

Hughes was a philanthropist, industrialist, film producer, director, aviator, and one of the wealthiest men in the world. He was also mentally unstable, eccentric, and, in the end, a recluse. I wanted to paint him because I believe people should remembered him for his accomplishments not for his personal problems. The life of Hughes was both inspiration and tragic.
