My hometown in Northern Utah, like many other downtowns across America, is in decline. People have been drawn out of the city and into the suburbs' shiny new cookie-cutter subdivisions and big box chain stores, and although improvements are being made, many storefronts and businesses remain defunct. A couple of years ago, I began my Local Color project, and set out to document these aging but memorable buildings with my Holga and Fuji color film. "Tattoo" is from this project, and sadly, this sign has been painted over and no longer exists.

I chose to shoot this project with a Holga toy camera because with this particular camera, I could make images with a timeless quality. Much of my town seems to have been forgotten, left behind, and I wanted to capture that lonesome, peopleless feeling. Toy cameras produce wonderfully blurred and out-of-focus photographs, with vignetted (darkened) corners. They usually have a "sweet spot" or one central area of focus, although even that isn't too sharp. They lend a surreal and dreamlike feeling to the photographs.

"Tattoo" comes in a beautiful matte finish.

All of my photographs are printed on Epson or Hahnemuhle premium photographic papers with Epson archival/acid-free inks. All prints are shipped in a cardboard mailer with an additional piece of cardboard to safeguard the print from bending or folding. All prints are signed by the artist (me!) below the image.
