"Biscornu" is a French adjective that means "that which has an irregular form, with projections" or "complicated and bizarre." To someone interested in needlecraft, a biscornu is a tiny eight-sided embroidered pillow that has as many uses as the creative mind can think up.

This biscornu is decorated in embroidery inspired by a trip to Japan. One side of the tiny pillow features four "maneki neko," which literally translates as "beckoning cat." A maneki neko is a common sculpture that is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The opposite side of the biscornu features pink cherry blossoms, which are a symbol of Japan that is recognized the world over.

This biscornu was originally intended to be used as a pincushion, although it could also be an ornament or scissor fob if a cord is added. Alternately, a basket or bowl filled with biscornus makes a great centerpiece.

Artist: Katherine Youngs (née Katherine Hayward)

Measurements: This biscornu is 2.75" (7cm) in diameter when worked 2-over-1 (two threads over one square) on 14-count fabric.
