raw abalone with Hill Tribe silver flower necklace on oxidized silver

Description

This is another lovely piece of abalone. When I put together the other elements surrounding a piece of abalone I try to complement the unique asthetic - shape, patterns, color - of that particular piece of shell. In this one, the overall look is smooth and mellow, but has the whole rainbow of colors represented. The shape of this one begged for the little flower charm to rest alongside just so.

The simple chain is oxidized silver. The flower charm and tiny faceted beads at the back are made by the Hill Tribe silver smiths. And the accent bead at the end of the extension chain is a yummy chrysoprase bead, meant to mimic the watery green in the abalone.

The chain measures 16 1/4" with a 3" extension. The abalone piece is right in between 3/4" and 1" in length and not quite 1/2" at it's widest part.

*RAW ABALONE:The abalone in my jewelry is raw and one-of-a-kind. My abalone collection is hand picked off the beach by me after it's been naturally broken by the power of the ocean, tumbled and polished in the surf, and washed upon the shore. The only processing done is drilling the hole (sometimes holes are already naturally present) and polishing by hand by rubbing with organic vegetable oil. Abalone is very precious to me. I've been beach-combing it for over 15 years. On every pilgrimage I make to collect more, I bring a quantity to toss back into the ocean to give thanks and offer a prayer for abundance. Wild abalone is in serious decline. Over the years I've seen dramatically less and less abalone tumbled on the shore - and this has been just the most recent 15 years! Every piece of jewelry with raw abalone has an added value to me because of this. In order for your piece to stay vibrant and colorful for years to come, I recommend some advice on care. Keep abalone out of direct sunlight, except when wearing it. For instance, laying the piece on a sunny dresser and leaving it there for days, weeks, etc...is NOT recommended. Giving the abalone a gentle rub with some pure oil (not mineral or fragrant oil) from time to time will help keep it from drying out - although I have pieces that I haven't polished in many years and they still look great. And avoid using chemical cleaning solutions on abalone. I suggest using a jewelry cloth to shine up the rest of the piece (the metal, etc...) while still avoiding the abalone. If you must use a liquid solution, simply take care to not submerse the abalone. Any other concerns, please feel free to inquire.
