Fish rubbing original (GYOTAKU) Porgy on batik
Description
Porgies are saltwater fishes characterized by a single dorsal fin and forked tail. They generally have deep, oval, compressed bodies and large heads.GYOTAKU are considered a thoughtful gift and are believed to bring good luck not only to fishermen but business people as well. The process is fairly simple: Pigment is applied to a real fish. Then cloth or paper is carefully touched to the fish. The print is pulled and a detailed mirror image results. I then paint the eye. Several images may be made from the same fish, but no two are ever exactly alike.
This original GYOTAKU (fish rubbing) was made on batik cloth. The fish is a porgy or scup and it was caught in Groton CT. The fish measures 10" and the batik cloth is 17" x 12". Please note that the fish is more horizontal on the cloth than shown here.It needs to be framed by you. I identify the fish, sign each original and supply a certificate of authenticity and other details of the art. Sometimes there are imperfections. These happened during the rubbing of the print and are unavoidable. Copyright 2008 Barry Singer. Reproduction rights belong to the artist. It will be shipped rolled in a tube.
