The Power of Positive Thinking, St. Philomena
Description
In 1802 the remains of a young woman were found in the catacomb of Saint Priscilla on the Via Salaria. It was covered by stones, the symbols on which indicated that the body was a martyr named Saint Philomena. It is believed she died at around age 14. The bones were exhumed, cataloged, and effectively forgotten since there was so little known about the person. But years later a visiting bishop had some sort of epiphany at the tomb and from then on many, many cures were reported due to the intercession of St.Philomena. Diseases, wounds, cancer, you name it. St. Philomena was the only person ever canonized based on nothing but her name and the cures. The thing is.....the modern church (is that an oxymoron?)
has concluded that she was just a dead girl, not a martyr and there was no reason to think she was a saint at all. So St. Philomena was crossed off the list of saints. oops.
Her following remains, however. St. Philomena is the patron saint for: babies, barrenness, bodily ills, children, children of Mary, desperate causes, forgotten causes, impossible causes, infants, infertility, lost causes (how many more ways can we say 'if you gave up'), the Living Rosary, poor people and priests. And anything else you just want to tack on there. Why not?
Necklace on green aluminum chain measures 18".
