Gypsy Buckle

Description

The French Tsigane gypsies were known to handcraft belts similar to this for protection against other gypsy tribes and unsympathetic authorities.

I have re-shaped the blade into a traditional dagger, and given the buckle a pewter finish that really brings to life this stunning and unique piece.

The buckle is poured into a vulcanized rubber mold using industrial-grade zinc. It is a one-piece design, so there are no weak spots due to weld or solder. The company name 'Hurt Couture' is engraved on the back, and proudly displays a 'Made In USA' stamp.

The leather is bought in whole hides from importers in Los Angeles, and I hand-cut each belt with specialized tools. I set and punch both the holes and grommets into the belt, and burn the company name into the suede pouch on the back of the belt. The pouch is also hand-sewn.

The buckle has a very unique design for attaching to the belt: above the dagger there is a pin. This is where the belt attaches, in two places. At one end of the belt there is a hole above the sheath, and you slide the pin through this first hole. Then you put the belt on, and when it comes through all the belt-loops, the standard holes at the end of the belt mount a second time on the same pin. Note in the final photo how it looks when worn; you merely see part of the top of the buckle, and the small pin.

This design allows for the wearer to quickly and easily produce the buckle as its dagger, since there are no snaps or locking mounts of any kind.
