red reindeer chicken egg pysanka ornament

Description

This sweet and simple Christmas ornament was made in the traditional Ukrainian pysanky method. The design is written on the eggshell with hot beeswax. Then the egg is given a dye bath. Wax is removed and several coats of polyurethane are added. A red ribbon is added so the ornament can be hung.

Deer represent prosperity, victory, joy and masculinity. The pine tree represents boldness and strength since the pine stays green through harsh winter.

I make a lot of these this time of year. They all have the deer on the front and they all say, "Merry Christmas 2008" on the back, but under the year I put various images. Pictured are some variations. I use both white and tan eggs. Size, shape and color vary widely.
