Description

This listing is for one scarf!

This scarf was made for the "Where in the World are the OWLS?" challenge. We we asked to make something that told everyone where we lived or where we were from.

My scarf was made in honor of one of the great Chicago establishments, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)! With out this bad boy, I wouldn't be able to get from here to there!
Each stripe in the scarf represents each of our el lines which are named by the colors. Now of course, the city couldn't use fabulous colors like teal and lime green and hot pink, but I thought the colors sort of brought out a neat retro feel. I easily could've rainbow striped this scarf, but I thought it best to stripe it based on the travel and placement of each el line.

The Red Line and Brown Line run in very similar directions to the North West side. The Red Line also reaches the South side and China Town. This is probably the most prominent line which is why it's the biggest stripe. The Yellow Line (or Skokie Swift) and Purple Line are less used and are more commuter trains to the close suburbs so I made their stripes smaller than the rest. The Blue Line and Pink Line used to be the same line. We recently acquired the Pink Line. The color was voted on by the Chicago Public Schools! The Orange Line and Green Line run the same track around the loop. The Orange line runs to Midway and the Green out to the West side.

I added a muslin patch which I ironed on a graphic of two buses and the Chicago skyline. I stitched it on in a rather punk rock style. I also stitched on 3 old CTA tokens like buttons! Starting in the 50's the tokens replaced "tickets" to ride the trains and buses but in 1999 the tokens were retired for good to make way for the re-loadable transit card.

Now that you have your history of "getting around Chicago", I can tell you about the scarf!

It was crocheted with Red Heart and TLC worsted yarns so it's extremely durable and warm! It's 6 ft. 9 in. long and 5 1/2 in. wide. This is perfect for wrapping around your face multiple times! Anyone living in Chicago knows you NEED a lot-o-scarf while waiting on the platform during our harsh winter months!
