I took a calligraphy class once when I was living in Japan, and immediately afterward my mind was so addled that I started seeing stroke counts in everything. Suddenly the TV antennae outside my studio window took on new meaning and I decided to paint them.

I searched through my husband's formidable kanji dictionary until I found a character that seemed to fit the shape: 差

(It's a bit of a stretch, but if you squint while meditating you can see it)　

It's pronounced "sa" and means difference or discrepancy, the significance of which is wide open for interpretation.

After doing the painting, I felt it wasn't quite finished, so I collaged pages from an old book with sketches of trees and flowers. I like how the branches grow out from the trunk of the antenna, making it into a bizarre urban tree. That's wide open for interpretation, too.

It's painted on a lightweight board with a 3/4" cradle, so it's ready to hang. It's sealed with a semi-glossy varnish, and signed & dated on the back.
