Description

Similar to hats from the last quarter of the 1700s, this hat is inspired by the lovely countess Lyndon, who was seduced by a reckless rogue.
This lovely chapeau is perfect for your next picnic at Versailles.

Between 1770 and 1795 ladies hats had grown in size while the gowns became more flowing, and came in all colors, with every kind of trim/decoration one could dream up.
A classic and recognizable example of this hat was the "Gainsborough", frequently making it's appearance in many of the portraits by the artist for whom it was named.

This one-of-a-kind chapeau is made of black silk satin Peau de Soie, with a stiff buckram base and wired brim.
Like the original in the above photo, the crown is offset slightly instead of centered to add a sweeping effect to the brim.
Two large ostrich plumes adorn the brim and wrap around the crown, and are each approx. 15 inches long,.
The edges of each plume are hand curled by me as they would have been over two centuries ago, to add even more fullness and authenticity.
A black, white and grey striped taffeta ribbon bow adorns the crown and the base of the feathers. It is wired to help hold it's classical shape.
black cord trim decorates the brim and base of the crown, adding classic 18th century detail.

The hat is meant to perch on the head a bit, and be worn at a slight tilt.
The entire brim is about 14" across
The crown has a 16" inside base circumference
and is about 3 3/4" tall.
**The inside of the crown has a small hair comb, but it is also recommended that one use a hat pin, as they did with this style originally.
