One of twelve images from my Saints Reimagined project. Based on the life of St. Clare of Assisi, one of the original followers of St. Francis and founder of the Poor Clares.

St. Clare is the patron of embroiderers, those in childbirth, and sufferers of eye diseases. Her feast day is August 11th.

Clare is depicted as a llama to match with the St. Francis image I created—llamas are both “sheep”, members of the herd, but also shepherds that care for the herd.This llama's markings match the habit of the Poor Clares. Clare did a lot of the same things Francis did--finding joy in poverty and simplicity--only without ever leaving her convent at San Damiano (pictured at her feet).

The labyrinth is metaphor for spiritual journey and the water is for nourishment along the journey. The tree may be Tree of Life, or simply the creative growth that comes from active contemplation. The llama at top of ladder is St. Francis. The vessel at the base of the ladder is a Pyx—a container for communion wafers. The pyx is associated with a story of Clare convincing Saracens to stop attacking town of Assisi.

This 12"x 9" image is hand-printed on a 20" x 16" sheet of cotton rag Hahnemuhle etching paper and is eleven of an edition of 30. This particular print is ALREADY MATTED, and ready to be placed in a standard 16" x 20" frame. Archival museum quality mat board backed by acid-free foam core.

Observer is one of three prints I ordered. I’m familiar with Ray Maseman’s work through his printmaking being featured at the Madison, WI Art Fair on the Square. I really enjoy the creative settings for his characters and their whimsical interactions, some with deeper meanings. For me, these pieces will be about finding and creating home in a new part of the country. Ray also included Observer framed for reference in completing the set of three, thank you!
