Life is good. There is always a new adventure waiting for me. I have constantly tackled new and different media as an artist, sometimes weaving back to where I began (oil painting) or picking up an old artwork to re-work, or re-discovering an art technique that I left behind years ago.
The same tendency for change and adventure imbues my non-art life as well. My husband and I have a farm in northern Maine, but we travel south almost every winter to the desert southwest so that we can explore and hike through New Mexico and Arizona. Some years we have set everything aside to travel through Canada to explore Alaska. These different climates and landscapes and cultures keep life exciting and “fill the well” creatively speaking.
I often choose my media based on my circumstances. When we are on the road, for example, I use small and portable materials – or materials that I gather along the way. When at the farm I settle into homesteading and gardening and steer toward primitive arts. I love creating and using the raw materials from our farm in Maine… balsam in abundance and beautiful lavender that defies the harsh environment.
All this may change as the stars turn and I find a new niche to explore. But that, for me, is what makes my life fun and challenging and rewarding.
Good wishes for a happy life, and I hope you are enjoying your ride as much as I am enjoying mine!
