On September 27, 2015, Megan crossed the finish line, only 6 minutes over her goal time, at her first marathon. Within weeks, it became apparent that something was medically wrong. Things snowballed very quickly from doctor appointments, to ER visits and then multiple stays in the hospital. As the list of things wrong with Megan grew and grew, doctors became more and more confused, “How can a healthy, marathon running, 31 year old woman now not be able to walk and feed herself?” Luckily all doctors she saw agreed that there was something physically wrong with her and they kept poking and prodding and testing and having hope.
After 2.5 years, Megan had a great group of doctors that all decided to change the focus from finding the root cause of this mysterious illness and the multitude of effects they were witnessing and trying to find medications that could get her stronger.
Today is almost 7 years later. When asked what is wrong with Megan, her reply is "Undiagnosed autoimmune disease with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, narcolepsy, non-epileptic seizures, chronic migraines, chronic UTI's, twitching and jerking, joint and muscle pain, brain fog, severe intolerance to warm temperatures and one really odd body odor, most likely caused by the Bartonella bacterium ravaging my body undiagnosed for a few years."Somehow through all of this she has found the love of her life and they are beginning their life together soon. But in order to do so, they have to make numerous home modifications to accommodate her disability.
Autoimmune Neuromuscular Disorder is the term Megan’s doctors are starting to use more and more. It makes sense, because most of her symptoms overlap with Multiple Sclerosis and other brain and nerve diseases. Megan and her husband have decided that 50% of the profits from this campaign are going toward the research of Autoimmune Neuromuscular Disorders through West Virginia University’s Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.
