This edition of Simon Black in Peril by Ivan Southall was published by Angus and Robertson in 1957.

The Details:
In very good condition. A gem! Mild tanning. Unclipped. Dust jacket in very good condition.

The Story:
Ivan Southall was an award-winning Australian writer of young-adult fiction and non-fiction. He was the first and still the only Australian to win the Carnegie Medal for children's literature. His books include Hills End, Ash Road, Josh, and Let the Balloon Go. Also notable is Fly West, a book of true stories based on his experiences flying in Short Sunderland flying boats during the Second World War. (goodreads)

The Author:
Ex-Squadron Leader Simon Black, DSO, DSC and Bar, and now a mechanic and garage proprietor in a small valley east of Melbourne, has invented a supersonic aircraft, 'Firefly'. Simon's offsider at the garage is teenager Johnny Grant. He looks after the business while Simon and elder brother Alan Grant work on their aircraft at Stanton Farm. Their secret is guarded by the faithful dog, Rex. The author was ahead of his time, the 'Firefly' being a VTOL (= Vertical Take-Off and Land) aircraft, rocket-powered with horizontal props in both wings - a primitive 'Harrier'. This introductory book takes you through the test flight, which is caught by a Mr Stanton of the 'Telegraph'. Simon and Alan decide to 'call in' on Simon's father, an aircraft manufacturer, in Sydney. After playing 'tag' with an RAAF Meteor over the City, Alan takes the controls and screams beneath the Harbour Bridge. Great stuff! All this in the first 30 pages. The duo eventually are given the task of finding a professor who has gone missing on a secret expedition to New Guinea. The story moves along at a fast pace, the style timeless. I ordered this book for a birthday present but wasn’t going to be home for the initial delivery date. I contacted Marianne, who kindly offered to hold off on posting the book until I was home. When the book arrived it was also lovingly wrapped which was an unexpected surprise and much appreciated. Not only a vintage book to enjoy but a lovely experience as well. Thanks again.

Response from Marianne de Pierres
