14k Antique Scarab Stick Pin, Egyptian Revival, Authentic Beetle, 14k Rosy Gold, Iridescent Green, Victorian, 3", circa 1880s, 1.97 grams.
From the 1880s to the 1930s, Egyptian Revival was all the rage following the translation of the Rosetta Stone and continued when King Tut's tomb was discovered in the 1920s. This beautiful stick features an authentic iridescent scarab beetle set in 14k rosy gold with golden antennae and legs. The antennae and legs are all intact, which is quite rare.
It measures 3" long and 3/4" wide. The pin straight and unbent. There are no jeweler or purity marks on the pin, which was typical for the time. It weighs 1.97 grams. The gold was tested with the GemOro AuRACLE Gold Tester.
The image of the scarab is translated from hieroglyphs to mean "to become" or "to transform" and was associated with regeneration as well as considered protective. Green was the symbolic color of rebirth to the Egyptians, and the flat base of the scarab could be inscribed with the name of a pharaoh or god to safeguard the wearer in the afterlife. The scarab was considered a good luck charm by the Egyptians.
You can use this pin on the lapel of your coat or jacket, to add detail to your hat or to give to your sweetheart. This antique stick pin is in lovely antique condition with typical wear for its age and was one of several gold stick pins that I purchased from an estate sale in Summerville, Maryland. A new decorative box will be included with your purchase.
