Description
GENUINE ANTIQUE PRINT, NOT A MODERN REPRODUCTION. This very scarce portrait was produced between 1889 and 1890 and depicts the Justice of the Supreme Court. The view the other portraits of justices you can search my shop titles for the words " supreme court " and that will bring them all up.
Max Rosenthal, Signed in the plate and dated, with etched signature of the court member beneath the portrait. Clear plate impression all around.
NOTE! My scan is rather dark -- the actual print itself is NOT as dark as shown. Satisfaction ASSURED!
TYPE OF PRINT: ETCHING, produced one-side only. Shown cropped in scan to save on file size, but actual margins ample and overall print is larger than shown in scan. Genuine original antique print .
SIZE: sheet size about 11 x 7 1/2+ (approximate) with marginal space all around and clear plate impression
Condition: Very Fine.
Additional comments: This original antique engraving was produced by John V Huber, Co in 1891 and is part of a series of hard to find portraits of members of the Supreme Court etched by Max Rosenthal, each dated in the plate and signed -- along with engraved/etched signature of the personage portrayed.
ABOUT ANTIQUE PRINTS: I have an 11 page ‘primer’ about all the basic types of antique prints -- you can view and print out here: www.rrparks.com/Wolverton/antiqueprintprimer.pdf .... And if you have any questions please ask me. Always enjoy talking ‘antique prints’.
SHIPPING: I certainly do combine on postage costs -- if you are purchasing more than one vintage print from me please let me know and I'll adjust the invoice if necessary so you pay postage for only ONE item in the package.
ART and CRAFT idea: A genuine etching print produced in the 1700s-1800s was produced using a largely cotton based paper and was originally
printed ‘wet’ (this applies to any intaglio: steel or copper plate engravings, genuine etchings, genuine lithographs, steel plate photogravures). This means you can take a steel plate engraving print and tint it yourself with simple watercolor washes and watercolor pencils. If like the artwork or a steel plate engraving print and wish it was in full color, you can do that. Lay down very light washes first and build up the color slowly. When you’re done, just iron the paper (medium setting on a rigid surface) to remove any buckling and press overnight to make it completely flat. And if you’re ambitious and looking to add new-vintage items to your store, pick up some engravings… tint them in whatever creative style you want … and you now have value-added inventory. Want to discuss tinting ideas? Please message me.

I bought this because I own the Levi Woodbury historic house. His likeness is now back in his first law office! Arrived quickly and was packaged well to avoid damage.
