Description

'Tangata Whenua 2', from my new collection, The Journey Home. A series of paintings celebrating discovering family, exploring culture and my reconnection to Aotearoa.

This artwork has been painted three times. Each successive layer adding more texture and greater meaning. I didn’t plan for it to proceed this way, but as the painting had been hanging around and my understanding of the topic grew, it just seemed right to keep developing the artwork.

Tangata Whenua is one of the first Māori words and concepts I understood in my journey home - 'People of the Land'. The connection Māori have for their land and nation, the earth itself, the ancestors that have passed through the veil and the family present now. It is more than just living on a patch of ground in a house, it is what it means to belong - to a people, to a place.

The gritty layers of textual paste, contrasting with the smooth, almost resin-like surface of the painting juxtaposes the earth, the water and the sky. The tree centred in the artwork establishes the link between the sky and the earth, Tane, the god of the forest who separated the Sky-Father and Earth-Mother. Also the god attributed to forming the first human and giving breath to humanity.

The tree simultaneously representing whakapapa, connecting the origin of creation with the birth of mankind and all living things.

‘Tangata Whenua 2’ has been painted on a professionally stretched linen canvas. With the sides painted, the back taped and strung, this work of art is ready to hang. This painting has been finished with a high gloss varnish and measures 61 x 61cm.
