WELCOME ✔ to my freshly baked shop. I'm very pleased to show you my work and describe a bit of my background and interests. I've spend four decades settled on a beautiful section of the rocky Maine coast and view salt water from my kitchen and a fresh water pond from my sales shop. I can't think of a more beautiful place to live and have never regretted moving from my north Texas home.
MENTORS ➤ The most surprising aspect of my life has been my extraordinary good fortune to have always found my needs and circumstance precisely and skillfully supported by a continuous lineage of mentors & teachers. As if each were linked and carefully ordered to guide my efforts in a perfectly logical progression. I have spent my life following their example to honor my skills.
STUDY ➤ I studied Architecture @ Texas A & M, received an Arts BFA @ University of Dallas and Ceramic Design MFA @ Alfred University. I have 40 years of practical experience in ceramic design & production @ Maine Kiln Works—my coastal Maine shop established in 1971.
SKILL ➤ I'm a skilled worker in wood and metal as well as clay and enjoy incorporating contrasting materials & skills in my products as well as my avocational interests. My work spaces include shops for machine tools & metal fabrication, wood working & pattern making, mold & die fabrication, clay & glaze mixing and a comprehensive array of 6 differently sized & configured kilns.
FAMILY ➤ I met my dear wife Elizabeth on a white water canoe trip and enjoy building traditional wooden boats which my 19 year old daughter enjoys using as much as myself. I build traditional dog sleds, design and fabricate much of my clay shop equipment, love to fly kites and squeeze to find time for home brewed ale.
PASSION ➤ I'm a passionate MAKER and have never once regretted the long hours and persistence required to build & maintain a small hand craft business over these many years. It has certainly never been easy but I would unequivocally make the same choice again. I am determined to honor my skills through daily use as long as I can physically exercise the opportunity.
VALUE ➤ My work is not inexpensive because I have no economies of scale. Compared to industrial manufacturing ceramic handcraft is laughably inefficient. Perhaps it's foolish to make something one step at time or perhaps that's the only way to create unique qualities?
HAND ➤ All of the pieces I list are entirely my own hand work: from designing the form, mixing the clay & glaze, forming my stoneware & porcelain and glazing and firing the finished work. I do everything involved but process the raw materials. The photographed piece is the actual one I will pack and ship to you.
SEARCH ☛ After four decades of working alone—I'm actively searching for an investing partner with similarly extreme interests and aspirations. Perhaps you know an appropriately unusual prospect?
