Ethical & Beautiful Products

About Bee & Lotus

We are committed to creating beautiful and useful items of quality that have been made ethically (caring for people and the environment in the process).

Our Journals are made in Australia from at least 80% reclaimed materials that include:
- a range of reclaimed, artist quality watercolour, vintage, and hand-dyed papers
- Leather from vintage garments and factory offcuts
- Thrifted vintage textiles, buttons, fasteners, stamps and matchbox labels

Our Hemp Tea Towels are hand loomed in Nepal by a small producer who harvests, prepares and weaves the fibres (https://www.facebook.com/himalayanallo).
They are then screen printed by hand in Australia with images collected from old Australian copyright registers. The images include brands from the late 1800s and early 1900s that would have appeared on flour and grain sacks, beer bottles, boxes of tea etc. We love the idea that these images will once again be seen in households in Australia and around the world.

Our Nettle bags are woven in Nepal by the same producer that makes our Tea Towels from Hemp. The wild nettle is harvested locally then processed and spun to create yarn which is then handcrafted into bags. The bags are dyed in Australia and fitted with vintage leather straps cut from old leather belts and hand sewn for strength. About the Owner

Hi I'm Clair, owner of Bee & Lotus. Perhaps I should say G'day instead? Actually most of us Australians don't speak like that but we did all ride kangaroos to school as kids ;).
So why journals and textiles you wonder? I have a background in Visual Arts where I specialised in printmaking and learnt bookbinding, then I moved into Conservation of paper objects but I've always been making textiles (print design, quilting, dyeing, embroidery etc) in my spare time too. I have a love of vintage things made from paper, wood, leather, linen, metal - pretty much anything pre-plastic era.

I have joined forces with a producer in Nepal to create the Hemp and Nettle items available in the Bee & Lotus Etsy shop. See more about them here: http://ventureplus.com.np/mala-thapa-magar-himalayan-allo-udhyog-natural-fabric-producer/

Why we sell what we sell
(the Ethics behind Bee & Lotus)

The amount of cheap, plastic, sweat-factory produced items in the local shopping mall is something that disturbs me on many levels. The production of this Fast Fashion junk creates environmental catastrophe worlds away, contributes to exploitation of people and sometimes results in death (Rana Plaza), creates mountains of non-degradable rubbish that pollutes our earth and water, and it doesn't even make consumers happy because the products are so poorly made they rarely last more than a few months. This constant flow of cheaply made junk is actually not cheap at all, it is costing us all in ways we are not aware of and it is contributing to our unhappiness.

The answer? Don't buy into Fast Fashion.
Purchase with care direct from craftspeople where possible, buy Fair Trade when you can, purchase quality goods made from sustainable materials where the environment is considered during production, purchase second-hand items, care for what you buy and mend rather than replace, teach your children the same.
