Daniel Wesson ist ein costa-ricanischer Maler und Naturforscher, der in der Gegend um Puerto Viejo in der südlichen Karibik lebt. Seine Werke entstehen aus dem tropischen Alltag, von den Nebelwäldern Monteverdes bis zum karibischen Regenwald, der Küste und den Korallenriffen.
Er betrachtet die tropische Natur als maximalistisch: eine außergewöhnliche Dichte an Arten, Formen, Texturen und Farben, die sich ständig wandelt. Daniel arbeitet in Serien und lässt jedes Motiv seine eigene Gestaltung bestimmen. Seine Gemälde bewegen sich zwischen Impressionismus, subtiler Abstraktion, Realismus und magischem Realismus.
Seine Gemälde entstehen durch das Aufbringen mehrerer Farbschichten, oft mit fluoreszierenden und metallischen Pigmenten, um die intensive Farb- und Lichtwirkung der Natur über und unter Wasser einzufangen. Als Naturforscher, Vogelbeobachter und Freitaucher malt er seine Motive mit Präzision und Intention. Wenn Figuren und Tiere erscheinen, fügen sie sich harmonisch in ihre Umgebung ein und suggerieren so eine stille Verbindung zwischen Mensch und Natur.
Kunst liegt in der Familie. Daniel wuchs im Atelier seines Vaters, des costa-ricanischen Malers Robert Wesson, auf. Gemeinsam betreiben sie Arte Jaguar, eine Familiengalerie mit Standorten in Monteverde und Playa Chiquita.

Daniel Wesson is a Costa Rican painter and naturalist living in the Puerto Viejo area of the South Caribbean. His work comes from daily time in the tropics, from the cloud forests of Monteverde to the Caribbean rainforest, coastline and coral reef.
He sees tropical nature as maximalist: an extraordinary density of species, forms, textures and colors that never stops changing. Daniel works in series and lets each subject decide its own treatment. His paintings move between impressionism, subtle abstraction, realism and magical realism.
His paintings are built up in successive layers of paint, often with fluorescent and metallic pigments, to capture the heightened color and light of being immersed in nature, above and below the water. As a naturalist, birdwatcher and freediver, he paints his subjects with both accuracy and intention. When figures and animals appear, they are woven into their surroundings, suggesting a quiet connection between people and the natural world.
Art runs in the family. Daniel grew up around the studio of his father, the Costa Rican painter Robert Wesson. Together they run Arte Jaguar, a family gallery with locations in Monteverde and Playa Chiquita.
